Renovations are an exciting time for every homeowner. They can also feel overwhelming — all the design choices, plus the "extra" repairs that always seem to crop up during demolition. Hiring a general contractor or project manager is an excellent way to take that stress off your plate.
When you hire someone to handle the ins and outs, it's important to do your research and find someone trustworthy and experienced, even if they came highly recommended.
Are they licensed and certified? Insured? Do they have a Masters degree in project management — and if not, do they at least have a decent amount of verifiable experience? Are they covered by WCB? Do they pull permits within the city you live in? If they ask for deposits, do they hold a Prepaid Contracting License?
These are all very important questions to ask. Any professional general contractor or project manager will have no problem answering them or providing proof. You are the one funding the project — peace of mind is worth the conversation.
We also highly recommend asking which companies they hire for the trades, then doing your research on those trades as well. Remember: it's your home and your renovation. It's okay to ask questions.
