Frost-free hose bibbs and mixing valves are a fantastic addition to a home — they stretch the watering season and make outdoor jobs far easier. They are not, however, indestructible.
At the end of the season, in September or October and before overnight temperatures drop below zero, drain your hose bibb lines thoroughly. And do not leave the garden hose hooked up through the winter. A connected hose traps water in the line.
Ice build-up during the extreme temperatures we get here in Alberta splits water lines. That split usually isn't discovered until spring, when the tap is turned on and water pours into a wall or ceiling instead of out the spout.
If you aren't sure whether your line has drained properly, call us. It takes minutes to check and it costs nothing to ask.
